Bird Trails Introduction
There are 3 trails, North, East and South, each with 7 or more sites. There is a brief description of the habitat; how to get there, with GPS readings; and the name of a few of the birds you might find there.
A progressive bird list available as a pdf file or xls file . The bird list is from short visits to many of the sites in the Bird Trails and is thus incomplete. If you would like to add to the list, please send your observations to the address below.or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. the webmaster.
The natural environment
Crows Nest - Highfields
The district stretches along the Great Dividing Range for 100 km north of Toowoomba.
East
The South Burnett Province of the Southeast Queensland Bioregion, with its basalt flows interspersed with sedimentary rocks, acid volcanics and metamorphics. Major vegetation types include rainforest, eucalypt woodlands, and open forest. It is part of the Upper Brisbane River catchment.
West
The Eastern Darling Downs Province of the Brigalow Belt Bioregion. The more productive lands here have been extensively cleared for farming and grazing. Streams flow west as part of the Condamine catchment of the Murray-Darling River system. Cooby Dam is a significant water bird habitat.
Birds
The Atlas of Australian Birds lists over 300 species of birds in the region, almost half of the total for mainland Australia. The richness of the bird fauna is a result of the wide range of habitats in the area.
Access
All of the Sites are accessible to the public. A permit to traverse is no longer required to access State Forests and Forest Reserves when using a vehicle. Do not enter a logging area that has been signposted. For further information contact Qld Parks and Wildlife Service 07 4639 4599. Roads are mostly bitumen or all-weather gravel, but be careful in wet weather.
