The Hampton Visitor Information Centre is housed in a building which is 112 years old.  It was donated by the Reushle family who immigrated to Australia in 1888 and settled in the Ravensbourne area in 1894.  The family occupied the home and land until Christian Reushle’s death in 1986.  He had lived in the home without electricity or running water until this time.

The colonial cottage was dismantled from its original site at Ravensbourne, some 15 kms away, by a team of Community Jobs Plan (CJP) participants (unemployed being retrained) and transported piece by piece to its present site.  The building was reconstructed by the CJP team using techniques from the pioneering days, limiting the use of electricity by only using power for a power saw with all other reconstruction being done by hand.

Many of the original features of the cottage have been maintained including the beautiful tallowwood flooring and the locally grown hoop pine used in the walls and interior roof.  The fretwork on the veranda, interior doors and doorknobs, two windows and one original stump remain.  The old kitchen annex now houses a mini museum which explains the project and displays artefacts from the old property.

2008 Queensland Visitor Information Centre Awards. The Information Centre gained an Award of Achievement for services to the tourism industry.

The Queensland awards, sponsored by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority were held in Rockhampton on 28 February.

The top spot in Category Two, ‘Visitor Information Centres staffed with one paid staff member and with or without volunteers’ went to Boonah VIC.  Hampton VIC and Wondai VIC received Awards of Achievements in this category in recognition of their submission and achievements over the year.  Other entrants in this category were Dalby VIC, Kuranda VIC, Warwick VIC and Stanthorpe VIC.

Hampton VIC manager Kerri Seccombe was at the function to receive the award and was excited to gain the acknowledgment amongst peers.  Speaking on the night Ms Seccombe recognised the tough competition. “We are delighted to be acknowledged in this way amongst our colleagues in the tourism industry.  VICs are at the forefront of tourism delivery to the consumer and our services are valuable to not only the local economy but also to the state-wide industry.”

“There has been an obvious growth in local tourism activity with visitor numbers steadily increasing year by year and more front line tourism related businesses opening.”

Ms Seccombe works with 34 enthusiastic volunteers at the Information Centre in the heart of the Crows Nest - Highfields District now part of the Toowoomba Region..  The centre has some exciting plans for the coming year with landscaping projects and upgrades to the centre on the agenda.
