This year’s scarecrow competition theme “Into The Future” inspired many people in the Crows Nest Shire to think about what this theme really meant to them. Concepts of the theme ranged from aliens and astronauts to the more political aspect “the future is Australian” and the rather emotional “The Phoenix” which reflected on the bushfires 3 years ago.

Dennis Nissen Motors of Crows Nest produced a rather unusual scarecrow promoting a robot mowing the lawn in 2020. This family project was constructed totally of objects from their business that would normally be thrown away including aluminium cans, water cooler bottles, flower pots etc.  It was awarded first prize in the Kynoch to Crows Nest Motel  i.e. along the New England Highway category.

To the children of Crows Nest Prep ‘Into The future’ was all about what they wanted to be when they grew up. Their display in the window at Littleton’s Leather proved a first prize winner in the Primary school age group category with little scarecrows made by each student promoting their possible future careers including policemen, doctors, firemen, hairdressers, cowboys, hockey players and the rather unusual helicopter builder.

Susan Phillip’s winning entry in The Town of Crows Nest category “This Little Scarecrow is heading into the Future” reflected on what lies ahead for one little astronaut’s  future space travel. The simple elements in this well composed entry worked creatively to tell his story.

The winning Highfields entry “Future Gardener-  sit and watch the grass grow” was a rather cheeky traditional scarecrow compiled largely of straw.

The two Most Outstanding Scarecrows of the competition awarded Special Prizes
were the beautifully constructed Crows Nest Care Services entry “The Future is Australian” which reminded us to consider that “our future is all things Australian” and the poignant entry “The  Phoenix”, a combined effort by the Crosato/Rogers family who lost all their possessions in the bushfires three years ago. This entry was their way of thanking the community for their support and looking into the future with promise.

The scarecrows will be displayed for the duration of the Crows Nest Week festival.
