Opportunity

An Economic Development plan for the former Crows Nest Shire (now the Crows - Nest Highfields District) identified major business/development opportunities within the areas of
1. Tourism
2. Intensive horticulture/floriculture
3. Retirement living/aged care
4. Small business.

  • The district borders the northern boundary of Toowoomba, the largest inland regional city and population centre in Queensland
  • The town of Crows Nest is 150 km west of the capital Brisbane (2 hours by road) and an easy 42 km north of Toowoomba on the New England highway.
  • The Toowoomba Regional Council is a local government leader in innovative attitudes.
  • The district is one of the fastest growing regions in Queensland and therefore has a real potential for both retail and small business development.
  • Tourism development is ripe for expansion. The district for the most part is relatively undeveloped, particularly in respect of its many scenic attractions.
  • The Floriculture industry in the district accounts for 33% of Queensland's total flower production.
  • Many retirees find the area ideal in so far as climate, natural beauty and the lack of intrusive or unsightly development - whilst the district still has easy and close proximity to major services.
  • There is an Industrial estate at Crows Nest. Land prices are very competitive, with median house prices around $255,000 (2011). The council will assist new business aspirants with guidance in obtaining finance and the directing of applications through numerous government agencies and funding bodies, should that be necessary.
  • The district's long term vision encourages the development of a range of viable rural industries and supports existing pursuits that build on our natural advantages and assets, to create jobs, enhance our lifestyle and provide a sustainable economic environmental and social future.
